G757 - Head of Mathematics, Statistics & Theoretical Physics

Closing date:  10 February 2017

Newcastle University is recognised as one of the UK’s great civic Russell Group Universities and is consistently ranked within the top one percent of world universities. Globally ambitious, the University aims to provide excellence with a purpose; focussing on the three societal challenges of ageing, social renewal and sustainability and backed by world-class research, staff and teaching facilities. Following the transformational restructure of the Faculty of Science, Agriculture and Engineering (SAgE) a new School of Mathematics, Statistics and Theoretical Physics has been created to assist in the delivery of  the “Investing in Science and Engineering Excellence” programme. Starting from a position of strength SAgE has flag-ship operations in Singapore and is developing a new Urban Sciences Building as part of the city’s Science Central site.

The new Head of School role provides a rare opportunity to be part of a new senior leadership team to develop a compelling vision and help shape the strategy that will enhance Newcastle’s profile and reputation as a world-leader in science and engineering disciplines. The new Head of School will be a member of the Faculty Executive Board and report directly to the Pro-Vice Chancellor of SAgE. As Head of School focussed on governance and performance improvement; you will be responsible for general academic management, staffing and financial matters. In addition to leading the School, you will be an advocate and ambassador for the University, the Faculty and the School on a national and international stage.

An accomplished academic in a relevant discipline you will have an international profile for research excellence and a proven track-record of outstanding leadership in large, successful and research-intensive institutions. With sound strategic decision-making skills and an ability to think beyond your personal academic discipline you will need to demonstrate an ability to contribute to cross faculty and university-wide corporate objectives. An inspirational leader and an effective international collaborator you will also possess the interpersonal skills to represent the University at the highest international levels.
